Trentwood's Orphan
A grieving daughter encounters love and ghosts in Victorian England.
Mary Winslow's father, Lord Trentwood, died two years ago of prolonged complications from a carriage accident caused by Mary years before. In a lonely, desperate moment, Mary accepts the proposal of the philandering Mr Spencer, her tenant, hoping he will calm his wild ways and become a surrogate father for her brother, Willem.
When Mary catches Mr Spencer with her scullery maid, the shock does more than end their engagement. The ghost of Mary's father, exasperated with Mary mucking things up, decides it is time he do his duty and get his daughter married to someone worthwhile.
Enter Lord Hartwell, back from America and livid at the idea that he is expected to pay the balance on the default rental payments of his brother, Mr Spencer. When Hartwell learns Mary is Mr Spencer's landlord, he is startled to find she is no longer the smiling, cheerful woman he met eight years ago.
Everyone around Mary claims they know what is best for her, despite her protests otherwise. It takes the meddling of her ghostly father Trentwood, her ex-fiancé Mr Spencer, his brother Hartwell, and the best of Victorian London, for Mary to take a journey of self-discovery and atonement for crimes wrought against the self.
